Dr Spiller Biocosmetics

Dr. Horst Spiller first started Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics in 1965. Hs background to that stage had been in food technology rather than cosmetics. However, different types of emulsions - combinations of oil and water - are an important part of food technology and it was: this unusual background which allowed Dr. Spiller to study and develop cosmetic emulsions from a completely different viewpoint.

The History of Dr Spiller Biocosmetics

The History of Dr Spiller BiocosmeticsInitially, Dr. Spiller produced regular `oil-in-water' emulsions. He was always very conscious of the detrimental effects on the skin of emulsifiers and preservatives. His aim was to keep these ingrecients - which are 'foreign' to the skin - to a minimum. To this end he purchased the best and purest raw materials for his products. He obtained distilled water from Munich - over 300km away. Yet he found that a large percentage of his production suffered from spoilage, due to his minimal use of preservatives.

He decided that he needed to work on an emulsion that would -emain stable without the addition of large amounts of powerful preservatives. 'Oil-in-water' emulsions employ - as the name implies - water as the outside phase. Bacteria love water so the emulsion has to be saturated with preservatives to kill them. Dr. Spiller felt that he could circumvent this problem by producing a cream where the water molecules were completely enclosed in oil, and therefore protected. In other words, he wanted to reverse his emulsions, for oil to form the outside phase. Bacteria find it difficult to survive in oil so these kinds of emulsions are largely self-protective. The oil component can be preserved with vitamins C and E - natural ingredients that are beneficial to the skin.

'Water-in-oil' emulsions are very old. They were first mentioned over 2000 years ago and were based on bees wax, almond and olive oil, with an alkaline substance gained from ash. These were called 'cool creams'. Later, so-called 'pomades' were produced in France. All these creams had one major disadvantage: they were very heavy as the oil component had to be more than 50%. The technology did not exist to produce 'water-in-oil' creams in the light form preferred by the public.

Dr. Spiller spent 10 years trying to make 'water-in-oil' creams light, easy to apply and comfortable on the skin. To achieve his aim it was necessary to throw away all the common knowledge about production of skin care creams. His background in the food industry eventually lead to a breakthrough, and what a breakthrough it was.

Dr. Spiller's discovery allowed him to reduce the oil content of 'water-in-oil' creams from 50+% to a minimum of 19%. He was able to reduce the content of emulsifiers in lotions to 0.9%, in creams to 3.5%. Due to the 'self-protecting' mechanism of his reverse emulsions he was able to greatly reduce the preservation requirements.

Preservative Free

Soon Dr. Spiller released a cream which was completely free of preservatives. The attention of the health authorities in the State of Bavaria was drawn to it. Dr. Spiller's claim of 'no preservation' was true the product was deemed to be unsafe for the public. After thorough testing the state laboratory agreed that the cream in question was free of preservatives, and that it was safe for everyday use where a client may dip a finger into it to remove product. 'today, the range of Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics contains 17 products which are free of any preservatives.

Dr. Spiller's discovery gave him another, completely unexpected, advantage. Our skin forms a natural protecting emulsion from sebum and perspiration. This emulsion is of the type 'water-in-oil' ebum encloses the minute droplets of perspiration and forms an homogenous, protective layer on the skin. Dr. Spiller's WIO creams are practically identical to this natural emulsion; they don't disturb the existing structure and blend in harmoniously.
